10th Anniversary Celebration Cruise for PaperBackSwap Members

Thursday, May 29th, 2014

By Cheryl G. (Poncer)

It is hard to believe that come the fall, PaperBackSwap will be 10 years old! What began as a way to swap books with other avid readers across the country has turned into so much more.

For me, it has become a lifeline, a lifeboat, a connection to friends near and far. I have had the pleasure to meet and make friends with folks across the US, friendships that will last a lifetime.

I first found PaperBackSwap in a tiny blurb in a Women’s Day magazine while waiting for my husband in some doctor’s office, there were too many doctors at the time to even remember which one.

I tore out the blurb (yes, selfish!) and stuck it in my pocket. It was deposited on my desk with the other scraps and items that my pockets always seem to collect. And there it sat for months and months. After he passed away, I found the scrap of paper and decided to investigate. Heaven knows I had too many books just sitting collecting dust. Some I had read upwards of 3 times, whiling away the hours of endless doctor visits and hospital stays.

In 2006 I signed up for an account. Being the suspicious person I was trained to be, I keep looking for the “catch”. Never did find it, and soon enough my cynical side took a backseat. The members were so kind! And generous! And funny! And the friendships started within the very first few months of my being a member. Receiving books was great, forming friendships was life altering.

And that bring us to the cruise in October 2014 for Members and their family & friends. NCL 1 sun

Rest in Peace

Tuesday, December 31st, 2013

By Vicky T. (VickyJo)

Here we are, at the end of another year.  I have to say that, all in all, it was a sad year in that we lost some wonderful authors in 2013.  I thought it would be appropriate to remark on a few of them here.  I have read works by all the following writers, and I can honestly say that I will miss every one of them.

Tom Clancy (1947-2013) published his first novel, The Hunt for Red October, in 1984 and basically gave birth to the military thriller genre.  Clancy hoped to see 5,000 copies of that first printing; an endorsement from President Ronald Reagan (“That’s my kind of yarn”) made it a huge success.  His best known character is Jack Ryan.

Elizabeth Peters (1927-2013) wrote a wonderful series of mysteries featuring Amelia Peabody and her husband Emerson, archaeologists and amateur sleuths.  She also wrote romantic suspense novels using the pen name Barbara Michaels.  Her real name was Barbara Mertz, and she had a PhD in Egyptology from the University of Chicago.

Richard Matheson (1926-2013) wrote about normal guys suddenly thrust into abnormal and/or terrifying situations.  He was superbly talented; Stephen King lists him as one of his major influences.  Matheson is probably best known for his novels I Am Legend and Bid Time Return (which became the movie “Somewhere in Time” with Christopher Reeve).

Vince Flynn (1966-2013) died far too soon, of prostate cancer.  His character Mitch Rapp, the CIA counter-terrorism agent, thrilled readers in novel after novel.  Flynn was dyslexic, and started writing to help cope with the difficulties of that disorder.  He listed Clancy as one of his influences.

E.L. Konigsburg (1930-2013) wrote for children, and was loved because she never wrote down to them.  She submitted two novels for publication in 1966, and they were both published in 1967: From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler and Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and me, Elizabeth.  She won the Newbery Medal in 1968 for Mixed-up Files, while Jennifer was named a Newbery Honor book, making her the first author to accomplish a double ‘win.’  She won the Medal again 29 years later for The View from Saturday.

Janet Dailey (1944-2013) is known to romance readers far and wide, and is probably best known for her series of books about the Calder family.  She wrote Harlequin romances for years before breaking into mainstream publishing.

Elmore Leonard (1925-2013) was from Detroit, and broke into publishing by writing westerns. He eventually became known for his crime mysteries, such as Rum Punch, Get Shorty and Out of Sight.  Many of his novels, both thrillers and westerns, were made into movies, and he acted as screenwriter because of his sharp sense of dialogue.  Leonard’s advice to writers: “Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip.”

Andrew Greeley (1928-2013) was a Catholic priest who wrote both novels and non-fiction, but was probably best known for his fiction: The Cardinal Sins, Thy Brother’s Wife, and his series of mysteries featuring Nuala Anne McGrail.  He may have been outspoken when it came to both religion and politics, but he could definitely tell a good story.

Books for Schools 2013!

Tuesday, December 3rd, 2013

It is with great pleasure we announce the kick-off of the

2013 Books for Schools Donation Campaign

Each year PaperBackSwap, through our generous members, donate brand-new new books to selected deserving elementary schools across the country.  The goal of the program is to provide children with books that they can read for pleasure. As you know, most of us learned the love of reading at an early age, and this is a great opportunity to share that joy. In the past three years PaperBackSwap and our members have donated over 70,000 new books to elementary schools. This year our goal is to provide at least 20,000 more books.

To make a donation of credits or PaperBackSwap money (which will be used to defray some of the shipping costs) click on the picture above or HERE to go to the donations page.

Let’s put books in the hands of children. Together PaperBackSwap and our wonderful members can make a difference!

Veterans Day 2013

Sunday, November 10th, 2013

By Mirah W. (mwelday)

According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs website, Veterans Day is ‘a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good’.  This year I will be celebrating Veterans Day without my husband, who is currently deployed to the Middle East region. But we are counting down, what we hope will be, the remaining days of this deployment for us.  I am a very proud Navy spouse and, even with the periods of separation, I believe in our choice to serve and have never regretted our decision to join the Navy.  I say ‘our’ because we made the decision together.  However, I also recognize my husband’s service is just one part of the much bigger picture.  We are all protected every day, every hour, and every second by someone else’s child, parent, sibling, spouse, or friend.

In honor of this Veterans Day, I decided to read a recent book that has been the cause of much condemnation by some and praise by others: No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden.  My husband read it and recommended it to me.

No Easy Day, whose title is derived from the Navy SEAL philosophy that ‘the only easy day was yesterday’, is a firsthand account of what it is like to train to be a SEAL, the toll that being a SEAL takes on a person, and the events leading up to and the night of the mission which led to the killing of Osama Bin Laden. Throughout the book I laughed at the tales of camaraderie and practical jokes and cried over the physical, mental, and emotional toll it took on the SEALs and their families. Once I got to the chapters regarding the research, preparation, and completion of the mission, my heart was pounding and I couldn’t put the book down.  My chest felt tight and I was practically holding my breath. When I read Owen’s account of his fellow SEAL calling in and reporting, “For God and country, I pass Geronimo. Geronimo E.K.I.A.”, I had tears streaming down my face.

I remembered crying over this mission when it was reported in the news. It’s hard to explain my emotions; I was relieved, sad, proud, and angry all at the same time.  I’m not implying I felt the impact of this moment more than others, I just felt it deeply from my perspective.  The events of September 11 are the reason we are a military family now.  We made a choice to change the direction of our lives after that day.  Because of the impact that day had on me and my husband, I felt I needed to know what happened to the man who orchestrated the event that would change not only our lives but America as a whole.  I had a right to be able to come full circle.  And Owen was very careful not to divulge information that would endanger missions of the future, which I respect and understand.

This year for Veterans Day, I encourage everyone to take to heart Owen’s message in the epilogue of No Easy Day: “I challenge every person who reads this to sacrifice a little something as well. I’ve been asked a question: ‘I’m not a SEAL and probably couldn’t do it if I tried, but what can I do to help?’  Two answers come to mind. Don’t just live, but live for a purpose bigger than yourself.  Be an asset to your family, community, and country. The second answer is that you can donate time and money to a veterans’ organization or one that supports wounded warriors.  These men and women have done their part and need our help.”  The SEAL who wrote this book is going beyond his own service and is donating the majority of the proceeds of No Easy Day to charities to help veterans.

I accept this SEAL’s challenge.  I will try to be an asset to others in my words and actions. Veterans Day means so much more to me now that I am part of a military family.  I recognize I truly am a part of something bigger than myself. I take to heart that while my husband wears the uniform there are things I can do, too, to serve my country.  I feel a swelling of gratitude and pride every time I see a military family’s reunion on television or hear our national anthem. I will continue to support veterans’ organizations and be the best possible supporter and encourager of our military as I can be.  And for me that starts at home.
