Breast Cancer Awareness Day

Forget about orange, Pink is “the” color for October as we support National Breast Cancer Awareness Month across the country.  The rally cry to support early diagnosis, research and treatment can be heard far and wide as it seems everyone has been impacted in some way by this disease.  We all know someone, maybe a friend, a family member or acquaintance who has battled breast cancer.  Many of us are fighting this ourselves every day.

Today PBS would like to recognize the people in your life affected by breast cancer. We encourage you to reply here with a post of their names in support, in memory, and in honor to create our “Remembrance Page”.   It’s a small thing, but just one way to say we won’t give up and we won’t forget.

We’re also giving away 5 copies of Uplift, Secrets from the Sisterhood of Breast Cancer Survivors by Barbara Delinsky.

This 10th anniversary updated edition is an inspiring collection of stories, advice and survival secrets.

(You do not have to post a name in your reply to be in the drawing.  Supportive comments welcome, too!)

We’ll randomly choose five winners from all replies.

“Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.”

  1. Leslie P. says:

In memory of my grandmother, Leona Svezia.

  2. Mary S. (kilchurn) , says:

I’m posting for Jenny C. who as we speak is battling Stage 2 HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer and for Martha L. who is a breast cancer survivor and one of the strongest, most wonderful women I know.

This is a heinous disease that has taken too many mom, sisters, daughters, aunts, and friends. Please take a moment and volunteer your time to the wonderful organizations out there working diligently everyday to find a cure.

In the mean time, do your monthly breast exams and get your annual mammogram!

  3. Krista B. (Kitsuune) , says:

Posting for my mama, Debi Bergman who is a breast cancer survivor! Love you, mom!

  4. Jen D. (daysleeper) says:

In memory of my mother, Maria, who lost a ten-year battle with breast cancer in 2004. They say time heals all wounds and losing a loved one gets easier as the years go by. But really, grief changes you and your expectations of life. What I wouldn’t give for another day, another hour, with my mom. What I wouldn’t give to hear her laugh or sing, to watch her hold the new babies in our family.

The world is a crazy-busy place, and women are notorious for taking care of others before taking care of themselves. Don’t put off your regular exams, and if you suspect something see your doctor right away. If my mother had been diagnosed before she was at stage four, she might still be here today.

What a great idea! Thank you so much for this memorial. I’m posting in honor of my very strong mother, who’s breast cancer has now been in remission for two years. Even though this is the case, it’s always top on all of our minds and hearts.

  45. Teresa C. says:

My mother and her two sisters have all had breast cancer, as well as their mother and aunt. My mother, Sondra Looney, is the only one to survive, and it’s because she adheres to the “Early Detection Is the Best Protection” mantra. Her eldest sister, Morna Kincheloe, had cancer in several areas besides the breast, fighting each one and winning each battle, until the enemy combined forces and defeated her. Her elder sister, Colene Moore, took the paths of “ignore it and it will go away” and relying on God to miraculously cure her. When she finally sought treatment it was too late. My grandmother, Helen Hayes Looney, and her sister Edith Hayes Freshour, were too elderly & in ill health to have surgery for theirs. Having met with genetic counselors, we’ve discovered that our susceptibility to breast cancer actually comes from my grandfather, Jess Looney, as all or most of his sisters have had it, as well as several of their children, including at least one nephew, as their ages have been younger at the onset and their mortality rate has been high. My cousins, three generations of them predominately female, are all aware of our high risk and I pray that they all keep this in mind and believe in EARLY DETECTION IS THE BEST PROTECTION!!

  46. Stephenie says:

God Bless my beautiful Mother – lost to uterine cancer after surviving breast cancer twice. She was brave and thought of others to the very end. Love You!!!

Posting for my mother who just had a good checkup at 4.5 years now. And my numerous friends who are also survivors!

  49. Karin H. (hector3918) says:

I lost my best friend Sue Shade to breast cancer at the young age of 37. I still miss her everyday and I try to honor her memory everyday. She was a fighter and was determined to see 2000 ring in. She died on New Years day, 2000. She has a strong passion for life and did not let breast cancer stop her from living her last days well. I pray for all other survivors like my Aunt Mary and Aunt Audrey.

  50. Lynn (simgirl) says:

For all my friends and family who have been affected by this horrible disease and by every form of cancer as well as this one. The ones who lost the battle, the ones who are fighting, and the ones who are marking many years of official remission.
