Forget about orange, Pink is “the” color for October as we support National Breast Cancer Awareness Month across the country. The rally cry to support early diagnosis, research and treatment can be heard far and wide as it seems everyone has been impacted in some way by this disease. We all know someone, maybe a friend, a family member or acquaintance who has battled breast cancer. Many of us are fighting this ourselves every day.
Today PBS would like to recognize the people in your life affected by breast cancer. We encourage you to reply here with a post of their names in support, in memory, and in honor to create our “Remembrance Page”. It’s a small thing, but just one way to say we won’t give up and we won’t forget.
We’re also giving away 5 copies of “Uplift, Secrets from the Sisterhood of Breast Cancer Survivors” by Barbara Delinsky.
This 10th anniversary updated edition is an inspiring collection of stories, advice and survival secrets.
(You do not have to post a name in your reply to be in the drawing. Supportive comments welcome, too!)
We’ll randomly choose five winners from all replies.

Thank you, PBS, for doing this!!! I’m a one-year survivor of stage 3 breast cancer (IDC), diagnosed at age 40. I had a double mastectomy, 4 rounds of chemotherapy, 42 radiation treatments, 4 reconstruction surgeries (to date) and now 10 years of hormonal therapy. It was a long 2010, but I’m so thankful to be alive!
I also want to remember my best friend from high school, Ginger S., who died one day before her 40th birthday from inflammatory breast cancer. She was a pediatrician who saw the early signs, but ignored them, much like I ignored my husband when he found my lump/tumor. She was a wonderful woman and friend and when she died, I had no idea what was in store for me in a few short months. She was my inspiration to keep fighting.
I also want to honor another one-year survivor and friend, Heather G., who was diagnosed last year at age 34. She also opted for a bilateral mastectomy and had horrible chemo treatments. She’s amazingly strong and inspirational!
PLEASE women – do your monthly breast self-exams and get your mammograms and ultrasounds (if/when needed) and do NOT wait! Mine was very aggressive and grew during the three weeks between diagnosis and surgery. I’d had a mammogram two years earlier (at age 37) that was clear.
MEN – “Grope your Wife and Save a Life”!!!! Mine did!!!! …I only wish I’d listened to him sooner and not blown off the lump as “just a muscle knot”…I could have saved my tatas!!!…or at least one of them!
Thank you to all the PBS members who supported me during, and even now after, my cancer journey! What a great group of people! And most of all, thank you to God for saving me and letting me share my story!
For my wonderful Mom, a 10 plus year survivor. She has always shown her children (9 of them) grace, humor, support, strength, courage and love. Her fight with cancer was no different. Through it all, she made sure we were all alright and pestered her doctors for facts to make sure her daughters and sons didn’t inherit this particular fight. Thanks Mom, just for being you. (and for this love of reading!)
In honor of my friend Ruth who is just beginning her fight with breast cancer!
In honor of my dear friend Sharon who passed away in January at the age of 45.
In honor of the survivors in my life – my mom, mother-in-law, dear friend Amanda
Found a lump 15 years ago it was not cancer but, going through the test all the fear, it changed me for the better go pink.
I do what I can to support the fight…. for EVERYONE…. because Everyone Deserves a Lifetime.
My mum, has fought and won twice now. I have had 5 lumps removed but, thankfully, none have been cancerous.
I fight for her, both grandmothers and both aunts who died of this disease.
Wow to J.C.C. your message got to me.
I am most fortunate to have many friends who are survivors. Most of all, I miss everyday my wonderful sweet mother in law, Margaret D Behm, who did not survive. Margie loved with all her heart and welcomed me into her family with open arms. She was the model of unconditional love. Cancer robbed us of her love and my children of a grandmother. Every donation I make to breast cancer awareness, every fight for research, every mammogram- that I hate & go to anyway- I do so in honor of Margaret D Behm. I love you always and carry your memories dearly inside my heart.
I am a four year breast cancer survivor. Thank you to all who have supported the fight. GO PINK!!
Pat Bunn, you are so missed !
For my sweet sweet sister Marcie. 34 was too young to be taken by this monstrous disease. I miss her so much.
To all you survivors out there – you’re the lucky ones. Make sure to go to ALL of your follow-up appointments and get all of your blood work and scans done. If not for yourself, do it for your loved ones. Everybody keep fighting and we WILL beat this!

For my Aunt Celia, who battled the disease and won, only to have her life cut short due to lung cancer. And for everyone else who is affected by this disease, I walk for all of you!

For my cousin, Adella, who found a lump last year and had a double mastectomy. She just finished the last of her surgeries this month. She’s not even 40 and the health nut of my family so we never thought this would happen to her.
So basically this is a reminder to us all…no matter our age, we should do a self-breast exam every month!
To all the strong women and their families.

My cancer was was found when I was 49, stage two with lymph node involvement and was NOT found on a mammogram and could NOT be felt. Luckily the radiologist ordered an ultrasound which clearly showed a 2.5cm tumor. I had 2 surgeries, lumpectomy then mastectomy, 6 months of chemo and 6 weeks of radiation.
PLEASE! If you have dense breasts, demand an ultrasound! It saved my life!!
In honor of my friend, Jessica, my aunt, Teresa, and my grandmother, Ruth.
Myself, 2 years out from diagnosis (diagnosed at age 37)…my auntie, whom I was named after (she is 3 years out) and the women around me who are 28 years out, 15 years out, 3 years out…they inspire me. And, for my kiddos (ages 8, 7 and 4) and husband, I am so grateful to be with you, and to God…I am forever thankful, for I am in His Hands.
For my Mom – a 5 year survivor
I’m just at the one year anniversary of my diagnosis (November 1st) – finished with surgeries and radiation. Face it, fight it , move forward.
“We are stronger than we expected to be, smarter than we thought we were, brave enough to face the future and blessed by each day.”
My mom was a 10-year survivor until she was re-diagnosed with breast cancer again this month. I am currently at her house with her after she just underwent the double mastectomy surgery as well as reconstruction. She is such a strong woman and doing so well!! She is my hero.
Next year, I plan on being tested myself for the breast cancer genes to move forward with my own health decisions.
I would love to win this book for my mom!
