I’d like to enter the Happy 14th Contest (congratulations PBS!). My favorite book at age 14 or thereabouts is without question The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Everyone remembers this book fondly. It’s now (ahem) 45+ years later and I still re-read it every few years. It still evokes the feelings of angst and loneliness, brotherhood and yearning today as it did back then. I remember it was assigned reading in the 8th or 9th grade–for my brother!–but I glommed the book from him and wouldn’t give it back until I’d finished it. I couldn’t put it down. S.E. Hinton perfectly captured the feelings of being a young teen in a very adult world.
Ponyboy is still one of my favorite book characters. And I’ll add, I requested a hardback copy for my “keeper shelf” here at PBS, which I will never part with.
I bet you receive many entries for this Happy 14th contest with The Outsiders named as the book most remembered and most cherished.
Anyway, Happy Anniversary PBS!!
