Features: Newsletter – August 2008

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Separated at Birth? New feature. You can now see how similar you are to your Buddies, with the new Similarity Index!  When you go to your Buddy List you will see a notation beside every Buddy that says Similarity: xx%.   Your similarity is based largely on whether or not you and that Buddy like the same books, and the Index accuracy will depend on whether or not you and your Buddies have star-rated your books and selected your favorite genres on your Member Homepage.  If you want to boost the accuracy of your Similarity Index, apply star ratings to books.  If your Buddies also do this, you will see your similarity indices adjust.  We have a lot of fun new features in mind, based on this index…and every book you rate gets us closer to being able to tackle those projects!  Read more about the Similarity Index here.

Renewed Review page. Upgraded feature. The Review page interface has been spiffed up, so when you choose to review a book you can Tag it at the same time, and you will now be able to apply a star rating right from the Review page (in fact that will be required)!  Recent reviews will be spotlighted on the Member Homepage now.

Push a Book.  New feature. You can now suggest a book to a Buddy that she or he might like to read. The Suggest option is available from the dropdown menu under More Options on the Book Details page.   You can see all the books that have been suggested to you in a new My Lists item in the menu under My Account; you can order from there (this will order from the suggester, if the book is on the suggester’s bookshelf when you click the Order this Book button on the suggestion), and you can also click “Not Interested” to remove any item from the list.  Check it out!  Read more about the Suggest a Book feature here.

We also have several new items “in the pipeline” to add to the Store when they arrive…magnetic PaperBackSwap “bumper stickers” (we are having these made), and more.  So watch the Kiosk for new arrivals!

Member of the Month – August 2008

Many members expressed their appreciation to Liese for her efforts in compiling many of Lester (ThreeCats)’s forum posts into a topic for all of our members to enjoy!  Lester’s words are truly inspirational and he will be missed terribly in the club.   We are lucky that Lester shared so much with us, and we know that it was a lot of work to organize the topic.  It is a wonderful tribute to Lester–who was MoM himself in May–and it will keep him with us.

If you haven’t seen the topic, it is “stickied” at the top of the Club Members’ Thoughts Discussion Forum here.

Liese, thanks so much for doing this!

You are our Member of the Month for August. Congratulations!

If you have any nominations for Member of the Month, submit them to us here.  Your nomination will not “expire”–anyone you nominate will have a chance at getting Member of the Month if enough nominations accumulate over time. Each month the person who has the most votes accumulated when the Newsletter goes to press gets to be Member of the Month and gets a newsletter mention and a nifty MoM icon to wear on profile and forum posts with pride.  So go for it! Tell us who’s helped you in the Forums, who’s been a great swapper, who in your opinion is a credit to PBS.  We are keeping a list of all the nominated members.  Who knows–one of them might be YOU!

Dear Members, Newsletter – June 2008

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

It’s June, the month for Grads and Dads!
Congratulations to all of you who are graduating from anything this month…and for those of you who aren’t, here are some ways to join the Class of 2008:

  • Graduate from Clutter.  Post those books you don’t need anymore!  If they were textbooks, remember to read the textbook exception for highlighting/underlining in the Help Center Book Condition Guidelines.  Get those books outta there and on to someone else who needs/wants them, and make way for new ones!
  • Graduate from I-have-to-finish-it syndrome. If the book you are reading is not your cup of tea, just close it and post it to your PBS Bookshelf for swapping.  Life’s too short to finish a book that you don’t like (but someone else might enjoy), just because you opened it.  Free yourself!  Getting a new book no longer means buying another one: you can swap this one, and order something else.
  • Graduate from Where the Heck is that Book? when one is requested from you.  Use Book Journal and your requests will show the physical space in your house to which you have assigned the book, right on the request.
  • Graduate from Prime Time Addiction. Come on, you know most of the stuff on TV in the summer is the junk they can’t sell any other time.  Turn it off, hide the remote, and dig into your TBR Pile!
  • Graduate from The Same Old Song. If you haven’t joined SwapaCD, then you have to check it out this week!  The changes that are launching today will blow you away.  No lie.  SwapaCD members, get ready for a whole new World o’Swap!

To all the Dads out there: we hope you have a great Father’s Day, with all those ties you don’t need, barbecue accessories you don’t need, and ear-hair-trimmers you don’t want to admit you need (but ahem).   Seriously, we know the presents don’t matter; the day is all about dads feeling appreciated for all they do, and have done, to get kids ready to go out on their own in the world.   But take comfort, those of you who have kids graduating this month: they don’t ever really leave.  They’ll be back…with laundry.
>Have a great June, everyone, and a happy Father’s Day!
Best,
Richard and
The PaperBackSwap Team

Here are some of the comments we got with nominations for Melody:

She is so much fun to follow in the forum threads with her fresh ideas, good sense, humor and interesting bits of trivia pulled from her travels on the internet. She … always has help or clues where to get info on a multitude of subjects. I consider her a true friend.”

“…She really keeps us on our toes in the political arena. She’s fab not only in the Current Events forum but also in CMT. Sometimes I’d be lost without her!”

“She is always so friendly and level headed, and she starts many interesting discussions.”

“Melody is such a positive force at PBS.  Fun and funny, calm and kind…she adds something to every topic she posts in.  I love to see ‘the dog’ avatar on a post because I know it will be something I’ll be glad I read.”

Melody, your posts in Forums seem to be music to everyone’s ears!  You are our Member of the Month for June. Congratulations!

Postal rate changes: Newsletter – May 2008

Monday, May 5th, 2008

On May 12th, USPS will raise the price of Media Mail.  Packages up to a pound will cost $2.23 to mail (a dime increase) and packages weighing one to two pounds will cost $2.58 (11 cents’ increase).  But you won’t sweat the dimes and pennies because you’ll be using PBS Printed Postage, and saving the gas money you would be using to drive to the PO for stamps.  See the new rates here.  (PBS Help Doc with just MM and FC rates here.) And If you use stamps, you’ll want to stock up on Forever Stamps now–they cost 41 cents until May 12th, and on May 12th they’ll be worth 42 cents.  The PBS system will be adjusted for the postal rate change on May 12th, so if you have packages to mail after May 12th, remember that the postage will be different on that date.   One good thing–the cost of electronic Delivery Confirmation will not change (it will still be 18 cents).
