Free Book Friday!

This week’s Free Book Friday prize is:

I am Forbidden by Anouk Markovits

The extraordinary story of a sister who believes and a sister who rebels, set inside the most insular Hasidic sect, the Satmar. — Spanning four generations, from pre-World War II Transylvania, to 1960s Paris, to contemporary New York, Markovits’ masterful novel shows what happens when unwavering love and unyielding law clash–a rabbi will save himself while his followers perish; a Gentile maid will be commanded to give up the boy she rescued because he is not of her faith; two devoted sisters will be forced apart when one begins to question their religion’s ancient doctrine. One sister embraces and finds comfort in the constraints of the world she’s always known, while the other knows she will suffocate in a life without intellectual freedom. Separated by the rules of their community, the two sisters are brought together again when a family secret threatens to make pariahs of them all. Dark, powerful, and utterly compelling, I Am Forbidden takes us deep inside the minds of those who leave their restrictive environments, and deep into the souls of those who struggle to stay.

Sounds like a great story to read.

  3. Colleen S. (Kahuna24) says:

Coming from a Jewish family whose grandfather left the faith to become a Baptist Minister it is a book I would cherish to see if I can figure why he would have had such an influence to change a long history of his life line. He never answered the question in his lifetime, so maybe this would give me a hint to his own struggle with the faith of his father, a Rabbi. He was a man of strong faith and love and gave so much love to his family in a gentle way.

  11. Dorthy H. (Blueiris) says:

This sounds like a book that my book club would enjoy! It is made up of women in my church and we enjoy books that help us examine our faith and the influences that cause some people to make one decision while others choose another path.

  12. Michael O. (modorney) says:

Like Dorthy says, a book that challenges your faith can be good. Like many Americans who came of age during the Cold War, Eastern Europe was seen as a monolith, and not a complex tapestry of subcultures. It would be good to read.
