Postal Forums Provide Expert Information: Newsletter – October 2005

Sunday, October 9th, 2005

Many times we go to the forums to get opinions and ideas. However, when it comes to the Postal Forums, you can count on the real deal. Postal worker and dedicated PBS member Steve L. has been working with the founders to provide accurate and up-to-date information to all club members. Steve reads these forums daily and addresses postal concerns and questions. Please take the time to read and review all the postal forums, as this information is invaluable to those members wanting to send and receive books in a timely and efficient manner. Thanks Steve for all you do to keep us in line with the USPS.

A few gentle reminders regarding mailing:
– Please don’t use tape over stamps. USPS must be able to ‘cancel’ stamps.
– Please don’t use tape on covers when mailing books. Use of tape causes covers to tear and receiving members to be disappointed.
– Saran Wrap makes an excellent ‘weather proof’ cover under the book wrappers. However, the Cling Plus or Press-n-Seal products leave a gluey residue on the covers, so please don’t use them.
– Media Mail packages over one pound should be taken to the post office instead of dropping them in a box. This is due to post 9/11 security restrictions at the USPS.

Please Don’t Send Damaged Books: Newsletter – October 2005

Thursday, October 6th, 2005

Just Like Santa, We’re Recording Who’s Been Naughty and Who’s Been Nice . . .so Please Don’t Send Damaged Books
With our new reporting system in place for members, all damaged book information will be recorded and reviewed. This includes how many times a member reports a book as damaged as well as how many times a member gets reported as sending a damaged book. If these numbers become inappropriate for any member at any given time, based on the terms of use, we will take action to close that member’s account. So, please only report books that are totally unacceptable.

Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say: Newsletter – August 2005

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

Responding to books is only one component of a member’s responsibilities. Once you respond, it is your responsibility to send a book when you say you will. Please DO NOT say you will send or have sent a book and then wait a few days later to do so. If you know you will be sending it in two days, then mark two days or even Personal Message the requestor.

Members that request books are counting on you to send a book when you say you will send it. Again, this concept falls back on our members’ integrity and honesty to make the club a wonderful experience for everyone!

To paraphrase an old dance tune, “Ship It – Ship It REAL Good”. Newsletter – July 2005

Tuesday, July 5th, 2005

We have received several wonderful suggestions for packing and shipping books to other members. Our goal is to offer a simple solution that meets all the requirements of getting a book to another member at a low cost and with minimal effort. Our patent-pending labeled book wrapper meets these needs. We’ve had thousands and thousands of books successfully shipped through the system. However, some of our wonderful members have come up with various ideas and suggestions for wrapping and shipping a book safely. We thought we’d share some of these ideas with you:

Some members are beginning to wrap books in saran wrap before wrapping them in the club’s paper book wrappers. This really helps to prevent water from damaging the book while in transit. We think that this is a great idea and encourage you to try it!

Brown paper grocery bags are made of sturdy paper. As an alternative to the wrapper, some members have chosen to wrap books with these bags. The address label can be taped to the front of the bag, or the address information can be hand written.

Also, some members like to purchase bubble wrappers or other types of envelopes. There is no problem with doing this as long as you tape the printed “mail to” address on the outside.

It is very important to have the proper return address and Request ID on the label. This information is needed when there are problems with the shipment of a book. Please remember to include these on the package.

Please also keep in mind that lickable stamps sometimes do not hold up well, especially on top of tape applied to the book wrapper. PLEASE USE SELF ADHESIVE STAMPS. Be sure to place stamps on the book wrapper AFTER taping the book for shipment. If tape is on top of the stamps, the USPS will not mail the item because they have no ability to mark the stamps “canceled”.

We highly recommend clear packing tape to cover the wrapper, as it holds up wonderfully. However, some members have gotten too liberal with their tape and used it to tape the wrapper to the cover of the book. This causes the book cover to become damaged when unwrapping the book. Please use ONLY one small piece of scotch tape to secure the wrapper in place before wrapping the book. Then you can use clear packing tape for the rest of the job.

We will continue to share ideas with you as they are offered. Thank you in advance for wrapping all your books with care!

Shipment Details Box: Newsletter – May 2005

Wednesday, May 4th, 2005

As a way to help members keep track of when books are coming and going, we have created a Shipment Details Box for all requests on the member’s home page. This box provides information that tells when books have been requested, accepted and mailed as well as its anticipated arrival date.

In order for this Details Box to be accurate, once a book request is accepted, the sender must indicate if they have mailed the book. Sometimes members accept a request, print the wrapper and mail the book but fail to indicate when they have mailed the book. Please help us provide everyone with up-to-date information on their requests and let us know when you mail a book. Thank you in advance for helping to manage expectations for requesting members.

Postal Savings for Multiple Books: Newsletter – May 2005

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2005

When using “Media Mail” wrapper system, most books will ship for $1.42. Occasionally one member will like a lot of books that another member has listed, and they will order multiple books from the same member. If you happen to have multiple books going to the same address, you may want to stop by the post office and mail these as a single package using the “Media Mail” rate. This will cost approximately $1.82, but you should have them weighed to be sure.
