13-digit ISBNs are here! Newsletter – December 2006

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

As we announced in the mass email sent out a couple of weeks ago, the site underwent a complete retooling on December 4th to allow books to be entered into the database with both 13- and 10-digit ISBNs. 13 digits will be the new standard in the publishing industry, as of January 1, 2007; some publishers have already made the change. You are now able to input the ISBN from your book (whether 10 or 13 digits) in order to post it, request it, or Wish List it. The site will work exactly the same as before—the only change will be that 13-digit ISBNs will be recognized by the database.

The One-page PBS label is here! Newsletter – November 2006

Monday, November 6th, 2006

You spoke, we heard. Many members wanted a one-page option so that they could print out the address on adhesive labels, and we have provided this. You will see the option in your Wrapper Settings page the next time you go to print the address to send a book.

The Book Journal is here! Newsletter – October 2006

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

This feature has been very popular already, and after introducing it we worked hard to smooth out any “wrinkles” in the programming. Now, when a Book Journaler gets a request for a book, the location of the book (which “space” the book has been entered into in the Book Journal) shows on the request itself! So you can easily go and find the book immediately. You can import your lists from other files into the Book Journal, and can assign books individually to “spaces” (for example, “bedroom bookshelf” or “box in guest room”) by title, OR by clicking the link to your TBR Pile, Books I’ve Read or Bookshelf list, and then clicking the button there to journal the book. You can try it out for a week for free, and it costs only 8 dollars a year to subscribe (in the Kiosk). Take a tour, try it for free for a week, and see what you think—and do let us know (by sending in Feedback) if there is a feature you would like added or changed. We are always looking to improve the site!

PBS Chapters. Newsletter – November 2006

Wednesday, November 1st, 2006

We have been asked so many times to organize local PBS “get-togethers”. We have had to decline, as we simply do not have the time to do this. But we CAN facilitate this for members who wish to organize their own PBS meet-ups! If you would like to be our local contact for a PBS Chapter, and have a meeting that you would like to publicize, you can send us the information in the feedback area, and we will include it in the Newsletter. Newsletters go out in the first two weeks of each month, so get us the info as soon as you can! You don’t have to have all the details. The Newsletter can provide a preliminary “heads-up” and interested members can contact you by Personal Message to get the time and place. Chapter Contacts must have a public profile, so that they have a nickname and can be found in the PBS Member Directory. Chapters can be regional (Midwest, Southern, East Coast, etc), city-based (Chicago, Boston, etc), or by state: you decide! Wouldn’t it be great to meet some of your PBS Buddies face-to-face? We hope to hear from some of our motivated, super-efficient members on this—we know you are out there!

Box-O-Books has had a facelift. Newsletter – October 2006

Friday, October 6th, 2006

Box-O-Books has had a facelift. We have had a lot of positive feedback about the renovations that were put in place about a week ago. We appreciate all the feedback that our Boxers sent in, and tried to address every item. Now, the Boxes are labeled differently (“They Mailed” or “You Mailed”) to help keep things straight (thanks, KajunFriend, for that suggestion!), PBS Delivery Confirmation and Requestor Conditions can be applied to Box-O-Books (many Boxers asked for this) and the whole feature should work much more smoothly, We have also introduced the concept of “verified Boxers”. If you use PBS Delivery Confirmation on a certain percentage of your Box-O-Books swaps, you will have a special “DC Boxer” icon that will show to other members. And of course, there is still the Boxer Rating system for personal feedback on each transaction—you can read about a Boxer before you choose to swap. If you aren’t subscribed to Box-O-Books, you can read about this feature in the Help Center, under the heading “Box-O-Books”.

We hear and obey! Newsletter – September 2006

Monday, September 4th, 2006

The auto-repost feature has been removed from PBS. This feature used to “schedule” every book received through PBS for reposting automatically after the default interval, if you did not choose otherwise at the time of marking the book received. The default setting for new accounts was 1 month. Many members used the auto-repost feature happily; but many new members were unaware of its existence, and were confused when books they hadn’t posted were requested from their bookshelves! After getting many requests to remove this feature, we have done so. You can still repost your books easily from the Repost Books area or your TBR Pile, both accessible by clicking “Book Lists” on the right menu of your account page, and choosing “Repost Books” or “TBR Pile” from the dropdown menu. And of course you can always repost your books manually if you like, by using the Post Books button at the top of the right-hand menu of your account page and entering the ISBN.

*For more information, see the Help Center item “Why do my books repost themselves?” at http://www.paperbackswap.com/help/help_item.php?id=118

The Help Center: Newsletter – August 2006

Monday, August 7th, 2006

The Help Center Oh, didn’t we mention that? You may have noticed the new gold button in the left menu of every page on the site. The old PBS FAQs have been rewritten, updated, and given a facelift. We are still adding items as need arises, but you should be able to find the answers to most of your questions about the site with just a couple of clicks. Click the gold “heading” buttons (the ones with the arrows to their left) to reveal a list of Help Center items in a dropdown menu. There is also a Quick Help box on the right side of the page, for those questions very frequently asked. Please explore the Help Center before contacting us with a question—as the club grows larger, we are having a hard time keeping up with feedback messages, and we want to continue to be responsive to those questions that need personal attention. The old FAQs were difficult to wade through; we hope the Help Center will…well, help! Even experienced members might learn something new there—take a look!
