This week’s Free Book Friday prize is:

Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln

by Doris Kearns Goodwin

On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. — Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war. That Lincoln succeeded was the result of a character that had been forged by life experiences that raised him above his more privileged and accomplished rivals. He won because he possessed an extraordinary ability to put himself in the place of other men, to experience what they were feeling, to understand their motives and desires.

This capacity enabled President Lincoln to bring his disgruntled opponents together, create the most unusual cabinet in history, and marshal their talents to preserve the Union and win the war.

I would like to read the book which inspired President Obama read prior to taking office. It would be interesting to compare the book to the actions and priorities which Obama made in selecting persons for his administration and what has transpired since that time throughout his time in office. I was reading Brands book on Franklin Roosevelt when this book was mentioned during his election. I always have thought there were a lot of similiarity between Roosevelt and Obama based on the the Stock Exchange action and how both of them closed the banks once in office. I wanted to suggest to Obama about reading Brands book as well.

I always thought that the winning elected Presidents should incorporate the talents of those he defeated into his cabinet. Unfortunately, too much negativity and pride are involved in today’s politics to bring foes together for the good of the nation. Lincoln did this and I would love to see how and its impact on our nation as I read this book after winning it! 🙂
