2,000,000-book Milestone Contest: Newsletter – April 2008

Monday, April 7th, 2008

So many of you participated in the contest to guess the exact minute that the PBS library of available books would reach 2,000,000.   The time was 8:53 AM ET on 3/24/2008, and the 2,000,000th book was Mr. Timothy,  posted by Vikki C. (Vikki). Vikki got an easy 5 free credits for posting the milestone book!

Our grand prize winner (of 100 Book Credits, 1 Year Box-O-Books, 1 Year Book Journal,  $10.00 PBS Money, $10.00 SwapaCD.com Money and $10.00 SwapaDVD.com Money) was  Michael T. (flopp), who has been a member since 12/10/2007.    Michael was bowled over by the news that he had won!  The second place winner (of  25 Book Credits, 1 Year Box-O-Books, 1 Year Book Journal, $5.00 PBS Money, $5.00 SwapaCD.com Money and $5.00 SwapaDVD.com Money) was  Angela T. (rubyred) 1/19/2008.  She plans to share her credits with her dad–March 24th was his birthday!  The third place winner (of 10 Book Credits, 1 Year Box-O-Books, 1 Year Book Journal, $3.00 PBS Money, $3.00 SwapaDVD.com Money and $3.00 SwapaDVD.com Money) was Tiffany M. (beangirl), who has been a member since 11/5/2007.  Tiffany was totally psyched.  Congratulations to all the winners!  For quotes from these winners, please see the Contest Results page on the site.

We also had 8 members who guessed within half an hour each way of the winning time, and got 1 Book Credit each: Shai G. (LoveBeingMOM), Kimberly T. (HeartsongChica), Wendy B. (wendytomereader), J. H. E. (J. H. E.), Kate M. (kinare), Emily W. (Emily W.), Christine L. (claro) and Dawn A. (eyebright13).

We would like to thank all who participated in the contest.  This was really fun, and we look forward to the next one!

Dear Members, Newsletter – March 2008

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

March is…National Foot Health Month, National Furniture Refinishing Month, National Frozen Food Month, National Noodle Month, and National Peanut Month. We’re gonna celebrate by eating frozen Pad Thai with our pedicured feet on our refinished dining room table, every single day!  How about you?

Well, we have a way for you to celebrate March, no feet OR peanuts involved: it’s time for another Contest!  Yes, the 2,000,000-book Milestone Contest is here!  We are giving away huge prizes, and allowing for more winners than ever. The way it works: Each member gets one guess at the precise minute that the PBS library contains two million available books.  Yes, that means when the two-millionth available book is posted.  Remember that the counter at the top of the site records books as they are posted–as they are requested (or put on hold), the number may fall again.  But when the book is posted that puts the number of available books over 2 million, that is the winning time!  You can submit guesses here beginning Monday March 10, 2008 at 12 NOON ET, and you have until the counter at the top of the site shows 1,995,000 books to submit your guess.  We will announce the winners on the contest page when the results have been tabulated.   For rules and prize descriptions, please see the Contest Page on the site. Good luck to everyone!

On a more somber note, we were so touched to hear from one of our members, who recently lost her husband.   She wanted to send a message of thanks to all who contacted her.
“How do I say thank you to all of the wonderful PBSers, who have helped me through this most difficult time? Every day I get cards, flowers, gifts or just a PM saying “thinking of you.” Late at night when sleep eludes me, I come to PBS and it lifts me up to see how many have put my sunny avatar in their signature and how many have a kind word to say to or about me. I wish I could convey how loved and special each word, each gesture makes me feel. From Richard and Robert to many whose name I don’t recognize, the outpouring of love and support for me is overwhelming. Thank you for filling a portion of an empty heart.” Cozette (CozSnShine)
Cozette, our thoughts are with you.  Things like this remind us that PaperBackSwap is more than a bookswapping club–it really is a family.

We wish all of our PBS family a wonderful March and great reading!

NEWS: Newsletter – September 2007

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

Just Put Down the Stamps, and No One Will Get Hurt. PBS Printable postage is here!  Yes, now you can print the postage to send your books right onto the PBS Wrapper.  Just click Print Wrapper as usual, and you will see the new Wrapper Settings page with the option to choose postage (PBS-DC included), just PBS-DC, or neither.  Check the package weight estimate and correct it if necessary, then print the wrapper and mail!  Because printed postage is not subject to the “13-oz regulation” (all packages bearing stamps that weigh over 13 oz must be handed to a postal clerk at the PO), you can mail your PBS-printed-postage-package (say that three times fast) with your outgoing mail, drop it in a blue mailbox, etc.  If you don’t have a postal scale, you should check out the one in the PBS Store–it’s a great deal at $24.99.  Remember, you can opt to use printed postage with any package, or not; there is no monthly subscription fee.  It’s as easy (and inexpensive) as we could make it!  Now get a-printin’!  PBS Postage will also become available for Box-O-Books and Custom DC very soon.

She’s in the Money...Well, in the book credits, at least.  The Winner of the PBS Third Birthday Contest (and 50 book credits) was Dawn F., who made a spectacular guess of 1,477,378 for the total available books as of noon on September 1st.  The actual number was just ONE book more: 1,477,379.   We got guesses all over the spectrum (a couple of you thought we’d have seven million books!), and some very close to the number, but no one as close as Dawn.  We don’t know if she’s pyschic or lucky or what, but we will be asking her to choose our lottery numbers for sure…

Apology from PBS. We had significant server trouble on August 20th; it took down the whole site for several hours, a really unprecedented length of downtime for PBS.  It took a while to track the problem to its source: the PBS Daily Digest and Daily Wish List.  These emails really put a strain on the server.  We think we have fixed the problem now.  We know you all love your Digests!  We are sorry our servers found them…well, indigestible.

Dear Members, Newsletter – March 2007

Monday, March 5th, 2007

March came in like a lion, all right—a MILlion! On March 2, 2007 at 10:38 AM ET, the number of available books passed one million. That’s right, 1,000,000 books—every one of them available to request! We can’t believe it ourselves. Thanks to all who played the Million-Books Contest, and congratulations to the winners, Matt (first place), Amy (second place) and Emily (third place). You can read more about the contest results, the prizes and the winners’ reactions to their good fortune on the Contest Results page.

We have some other exciting news that we would like to share: shortly before the million-available-books mark was passed, PBS achieved another milestone: a million books swapped! Yes, more than a million books have changed hands at PBS! That doesn’t include Box-O-Books swaps. Kind of takes your breath away, doesn’t it? More than a million books have found new homes and new readers since we started this site a couple of years ago. Thank you all so much for sharing your books with each other. The landfills thank you. The other members thank you. And most of all, the books thank you! You have given them new life and new eager readers. What more could a book ask?

Thanks again to everyone who has made PBS work so well. We put a lot of effort into keeping the site running smoothly and are constantly working on improvements to it and on new features to offer to the club, but the members are the heart and soul of the site—you are PBS! Just keep on doing what you’re doing: reading and sharing, and we’ll be celebrating a new milestone before too long!

Half a Million Strong! Newsletter – June 2006

–The PBS Database of available books reached 500,000 at 5:01 PM ET on 5/21/2006. The book was “The Poison Master” by Liz Williams, and was posted into the system by Chris B. Congratulations to Barbara S. (barbelaine1) of Perryville, MD, who guessed the time exactly, and won 50 credits! We predict a great summer of reading for Barbara! Thanks to all who played.

500,000 Books: Newsletter – May 2006
