Dear Members, Newsletter – June 2008

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

It’s June, the month for Grads and Dads!
Congratulations to all of you who are graduating from anything this month…and for those of you who aren’t, here are some ways to join the Class of 2008:

  • Graduate from Clutter.  Post those books you don’t need anymore!  If they were textbooks, remember to read the textbook exception for highlighting/underlining in the Help Center Book Condition Guidelines.  Get those books outta there and on to someone else who needs/wants them, and make way for new ones!
  • Graduate from I-have-to-finish-it syndrome. If the book you are reading is not your cup of tea, just close it and post it to your PBS Bookshelf for swapping.  Life’s too short to finish a book that you don’t like (but someone else might enjoy), just because you opened it.  Free yourself!  Getting a new book no longer means buying another one: you can swap this one, and order something else.
  • Graduate from Where the Heck is that Book? when one is requested from you.  Use Book Journal and your requests will show the physical space in your house to which you have assigned the book, right on the request.
  • Graduate from Prime Time Addiction. Come on, you know most of the stuff on TV in the summer is the junk they can’t sell any other time.  Turn it off, hide the remote, and dig into your TBR Pile!
  • Graduate from The Same Old Song. If you haven’t joined SwapaCD, then you have to check it out this week!  The changes that are launching today will blow you away.  No lie.  SwapaCD members, get ready for a whole new World o’Swap!

To all the Dads out there: we hope you have a great Father’s Day, with all those ties you don’t need, barbecue accessories you don’t need, and ear-hair-trimmers you don’t want to admit you need (but ahem).   Seriously, we know the presents don’t matter; the day is all about dads feeling appreciated for all they do, and have done, to get kids ready to go out on their own in the world.   But take comfort, those of you who have kids graduating this month: they don’t ever really leave.  They’ll be back…with laundry.
>Have a great June, everyone, and a happy Father’s Day!
Best,
Richard and

Dear Members, Newsletter – May 2008

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

May brings us Cinco de Mayo, Children’s Book week, and the 29th anniversary of the first Sudoku puzzle (published as Number Place in Dell Puzzle Magazine).   And Mother’s Day, of course.   One of the best holidays of the year–what’s more natural than honoring Mom?  Sit up straight. Do you have something special planned?  Don’t mumble. We hope so!
But if you are a mother…or have a mother…you know that Mother’s Day is more than one day, or a card or a brunch or a present.  It’s a time to express what kids of all ages feel all year, every day, for mothers who are still with us, or those departed.  This Sunday in May reminds us all to say those few words that mean so much: Thanks, Mom, for everything.
Things to do for May:

  • Note the postage increase coming May 12th. Both Media Mail rates and First Class Parcel rates will be changing.  See the new postal rates here.   Remember to stock up on Forever stamps for your letter mail!  They’ll cost you 41 cents each today, and will each be worth 42 cents on May 12th.
  • Use PBS Printed Postage, and cross trips to the PO off your errand list. The weather is too nice to stand in line at the Post Office!  You’ll save money if you’re not spending the gasoline to drive to the PO.   Printing postage means your packages can be mailed from anywhere (blue mailboxes, home, dropboxes at work), unlike using stamps.  Stamped packages over 13 ounces have to be handed to a postal employee.  Use PBS Printed Postage and free yourself!  Also the Instant Credit you will get when you mark the book mailed with PBS Printed Postage is very nice.  Read more about PBS Postage here.
  • Check out the PBS Kiosk for cool new stuff.  More details below.
  • Use the Vacation Hold if you are planning a vacation: holds can be set in advance, and will keep you from missing Wish List offers and book requests while you are away.  The link to the Vacation Hold page is under My Account in the top menu, and there are also links at the top of the Account Settings page and your Bookshelf.
  • Start a blog. Why not?  It’s time to join the blogosphere.    You can use the neat-o PBS Widgets to display one of your book lists on your blog or personal webpage.  Tell folks what books you’re wishing for or what books you’ve read or what books are on your To Be Read list or on your Bookshelf.   You have thoughts to share–blog all about it!  Read more about the PBS Widgets below.
  • Kiss your mama.

Have a great month, everyone, and a great Mother’s Day!  Because we said so.
Best,
Richard and

Dear Members, Newsletter – April 2008

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

We wish this were an April Fool’s joke, but it’s not: one of the co-founders of our sites, Robert Swarthout, is leaving PaperBackSwap.   PaperBackSwap was co-created by Robert and Richard Pickering back in 2004, when Robert was fresh out of college; from there we launched SwapaCD in 2006 and SwapaDVD in 2007.  Robert did a great job helping us run these clubs and he will surely be missed.    We had hoped he would stay with the sites as the clubs continue to grow, but he has been offered an opportunity that he doesn’t want to pass up and has decided to take it.   We are very sad to see him go, but we were lucky to have him as long as we did.  We wish him well in his new endeavors.

Spring is a time for new beginnings.  We prefer to think of it that way rather than as an ending.  Rest assured that the remaining programmers on the Team will be there for the club and carry out that vision of Internet swapping that all started here with PaperBackSwap.  As always, we welcome our members’ ideas which have contributed so much to make this the best book club in America; your continued input will help us grow in the future and is sincerely appreciated.

We wish all of our members a wonderful Spring!

Dear Members, Newsletter – March 2008

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

March is…National Foot Health Month, National Furniture Refinishing Month, National Frozen Food Month, National Noodle Month, and National Peanut Month. We’re gonna celebrate by eating frozen Pad Thai with our pedicured feet on our refinished dining room table, every single day!  How about you?

Well, we have a way for you to celebrate March, no feet OR peanuts involved: it’s time for another Contest!  Yes, the 2,000,000-book Milestone Contest is here!  We are giving away huge prizes, and allowing for more winners than ever. The way it works: Each member gets one guess at the precise minute that the PBS library contains two million available books.  Yes, that means when the two-millionth available book is posted.  Remember that the counter at the top of the site records books as they are posted–as they are requested (or put on hold), the number may fall again.  But when the book is posted that puts the number of available books over 2 million, that is the winning time!  You can submit guesses here beginning Monday March 10, 2008 at 12 NOON ET, and you have until the counter at the top of the site shows 1,995,000 books to submit your guess.  We will announce the winners on the contest page when the results have been tabulated.   For rules and prize descriptions, please see the Contest Page on the site. Good luck to everyone!

On a more somber note, we were so touched to hear from one of our members, who recently lost her husband.   She wanted to send a message of thanks to all who contacted her.
“How do I say thank you to all of the wonderful PBSers, who have helped me through this most difficult time? Every day I get cards, flowers, gifts or just a PM saying “thinking of you.” Late at night when sleep eludes me, I come to PBS and it lifts me up to see how many have put my sunny avatar in their signature and how many have a kind word to say to or about me. I wish I could convey how loved and special each word, each gesture makes me feel. From Richard and Robert to many whose name I don’t recognize, the outpouring of love and support for me is overwhelming. Thank you for filling a portion of an empty heart.” Cozette (CozSnShine)
Cozette, our thoughts are with you.  Things like this remind us that PaperBackSwap is more than a bookswapping club–it really is a family.

We wish all of our PBS family a wonderful March and great reading!

Dear Members, Newsletter – January 2008

Happy New Year!

Time to hit the books!   Your TBR piles have mounted up while you ran around getting everything done for the holidays, and now you have to get to those books that have been waiting to be read.   We have visions of our members, curled up under PBS blankets, reading books by the glow of their LightWedges…humming “Though the weather outside is frightful…staying inside with a book is so delightful.  I have another 110 pages to go…Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!”

Oops did we just put that song in your head?  Quick, hop over to SwapaCD and order a some new music to erase that annoying sound.

What will 2008 bring to PaperBackSwap?  More books, more members, we have no doubt of that.  We have tons of new features in the works as always.  We are also working on the other sites (SwapaCD and SwapaDVD) of course, so you can expect new stuff over there too.   Yep, things are hopping all over Swapland.

We hope that 2008 is filled with great reads and great fun for all of our members, and we hope that it brings you all that you yearn for…or more of the same if everything is hunky-dory!

Best,

Richard and Robert
and The PaperBackSwap Team

Dear Members, Newsletter – December 2007

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

It’s beginning to look a lot like…you know. Shopping is crazy, the malls are packed, the US Mail is bogging down–all the joys of the holiday season!
Wonderful as this time of year is, it can be pretty high-pressured. So practice some survival skills: Set aside some time for yourself to read a book or watch a movie. Bring a CD with you to listen to music while you’re in your car fighting the traffic. Try to show patience with others who are no doubt feeling stressed also. Reach out to someone who may be spending the holiday alone. Take a break from your mad pace to reflect on the year that is drawing to a close. The presents don’t matter–the present does. Enjoy your present! the rest will follow.
We ourselves look back on a very full year: the million-book milestone (a million books available in the PBS library) was passed in March; a new site layout went into place at PaperBackSwap and SwapaCD; a whole new sister site for swapping DVDs was launched. At PaperBackSwap, the membership growth has been staggering, and we have added a ton of features. The number of bookswaps passed TWO MILLION in the last month (not counting Box-O-Books swaps), and the number of books available on the site is at nearly two million now.
We also need to take a breather from our massive To Do lists to say Thanks to all of you for coming here, for swapping your books, for everything you do. We wish you a great holiday, whichever you celebrate at this time of year. Happy Chanuka, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Eid al-Adha and Winter Solstice.
From our PBS Family to yours, we wish a wonderful season to all.
Richard and Robert and The PaperBackSwap Team

Dear Members, Newsletter – November 2007

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

So…you’ve waved goodnight to the last trick-or-treater, blown the candle out in the Jack O’Lantern, and set your clocks back. You know what this means: the season of madness is here! Yes, that wonderful, harried, chock-full holiday time. The next couple of months will be so busy: shops will be crowded, traffic insane, and your To Do list will seem endless. In the middle of all the rushing around, do try to take time for yourselves, to savor the things that make you happy. A chat with a good friend; great music from your iPod while you rake leaves; that moment of anticipation when you first open a good book to start reading; the laughter around the dinner table. Little opportunities for thanksgiving come every day.
We have those opportunities too–we are reminded every time we get happy feedback from a member. We are thankful for every one of you: the members who volunteer their efforts to help the site, those who have made the Discussion Forums feel like a giant, wacky family, and of course all of the members who keep posting and swapping books. Each of you contributes so much here–your books, your time, yourselves. We don’t forget that you are the club. In other words, we may set the table, but you bring the pumpkin pie!
We wish all of you a joyous Thanksgiving season.
