What is Box-O-Books™? Newsletter – December 2005

Friday, December 2nd, 2005

We are beginning the process of introducing a number of new features designed for all members to select from new “paid for” services. The funds generated will help us to maintain and run the club. Many of you have asked how you can help with financial support of PaperBackSwap.com – well this is your chance. By enrolling in Box-O-Books™ ($8.00 per year), you can support the club and help pay the costs of maintaining the site while at the same time trade books using no credits and reduce your postage costs. You actually SAVE money by using this new service. How cool is that!?
Box-O-Books™

Now you can ship books for LESS MONEY and NO CREDITS are needed. A new and exclusive feature just for participating members here at PaperBackSwap.com!

Here’s how it works:

If you are a participating member of Box-O-Books™, you’ll be able to access a list of other participants and browse their bookshelves. Once you find a participant that you’d like to swap a box with, you begin the process by selecting as many books as you are willing to trade with that member. Let’s say they have 55 books posted and you select 10 of them. You then “prioritize” the books that you want from 1 to 10 in the system (with 1 being the most important, and 10 being the least important).

The system then sends an email invitation to the other member asking them if they would like to trade up to 10 books with you. Next, they go to your bookshelf and view all of your books. Then you both agree on the number of books that you want to trade (10 for 10, or any other combination).

For example, let’s suppose that the other member only wants to trade for 7 of your books (and not 10). So you both agree on which books to exchange based on the priority of the books you listed. You each box up your books and take them to the Post Office. You mail your 7 books to them, and they mail their 7 books to you! How cool is that? No credits needed, and you save on postage as well!

Of course, if you still want the remaining 3 books, you can use your regular book credits to order them from this member through the regular PaperBackSwap process…visit their bookshelf and using your credits, order these 3 directly.

We hope that once we roll out this new feature, you will enroll. It is a terrific service which will help to maintain and pay for our great site. At $8 per year, you can save money on your very first exchange using Box-O-Books™.

This feature is in Beta testing and will be released to all members in the very near future.

Let the Games Begin! Newsletter – September 2008

Monday, October 10th, 2005

Part of the fun at PaperBackSwap is trading books, chatting and making new friends, posting on forums and watching your Book Map fill up with lots of red dots. Another part is finding all the entertaining games and contests that are offered daily. Now there is a section dedicated to GAMES. Richard started with his Twenty Question game, and members stepped in and took on the roll of game moderators. So far, we’ve had more than 100 games take place on the site. In addition to games, look for two new contests to be offered in November.

The first game, “Count Your Blessings . . . and Books” will give members a chance to guess the last two digits of the total number of books posted on the site as of Thanksgiving Day 8 pm ET. This contest will be limited to the first 400 members. Contest rules and instructions will be distributed the first week of November.

The second contest, “A Quarter of a Million” offers all members a chance to participate in the fun. In this contest, members will be given chances to guess the exact date and time that a member will post the 250,000th book. Time slots are on a first-come, first-reserve basis. So, get your mathematical thinking caps on and start calculating so that you’re ready to reserve your guesses. May the best “guesser” win!

Customized Email Options: Newsletter – October 2005

Saturday, October 8th, 2005

Ever open your email and find out that PBS has been working all night long just for you? There are emails to notify you of a book you requested, email to let you know a book has been mailed, email to say you’ve earned a credit, email that says you have personal messages . . . and the list goes on and on.

Well, now the list of emails coming from PBS can be customized to meet a member’s individual needs. Maybe you don’t really need to know that we’ve sent your request on to another member or that you have a personal message that the book you ordered has just been mailed. Now you can go to ‘My Account’ => ‘Account Settings’ => ‘Email Settings’ and choose to ‘opt out’ of specific emails that are listed.

Of course, some emails are totally necessary and serve as reminders from The PBS Team. Others are FYI and totally optional. You choose. Just another way PaperBackSwap is continuing to improve the club for all members.

Ever Wonder “Why Wasn’t My Request Accepted?” Newsletter – October 2005

Tuesday, October 4th, 2005

Well, wonder no more. Now members whose requests are not accepted are able to see why. Any time a request is turned down by a member, they must provide the reason why they are not able to keep their commitment to swapping the books they have posted to the site.

If your request was turned down due to Requestor Conditions and there is no other copy of the book available, you will be notified. Please keep in mind that if you maintain your conditions, there will be an active copy of the book in the system, so you will not be able to Wish List the book.

As a reminder, you should only post books that you are willing to trade. Also, you should only Wish List books that you are willing to request when they become available. Lastly, your Requestor Conditions should be within reason. Given these standards, we should rarely see book requests being turned down. A count of the number of requests turned down is kept for each member.

Wish List 2.0 The New & Improved Wish List 2.0 Has Arrived! Newsletter – September 2005

Sunday, September 11th, 2005

The Wish List feature has recently been updated to meet the growing needs of our club members. What we like to call it Wish List 2.0 which has many changes from the previous version.

When you are searching for a book and it is not available in the main library, you are given an option to add that particular book to your Wish List. Keep in mind that you should never place a book on your Wish List unless you are ready and willing to request it when it becomes available. This helps to minimize the disappointment of members when their books are wished for – but not requested. You can even select to automatically request any book on your wish list by turning on the auto request. Simply click ‘yes’ on the Auto Request option for each book you would like to automatically request when it is available. That way you won’t miss your chance to get any book on your Wish List.

If you are the first person to wish for a particular book, then you will be first in line to be offered the book when it is posted. The next person who adds it to their Wish List will be second, and so on.

When a member posts a book to the system that is on the Club’s Wish List, the first person in line for the book will be notified and given first chance at requesting it. If they do not respond within 48 hours, then the book is passed on to the next person in line. This process is repeated until all members who have the book on their Wish List are given a chance to request the book. If none of the members who had the book on their Wish List request it, then the book is placed in the main library for any and all members to request.

Important Note: If you have a book on your Wish List, and you do not request it when it is offered to you, this book will be taken off your Wish List and placed on your Reminder List. Because you made a decision not to request the book at the time it was offered to you, you cannot add it back to your Wish List until the newly posted book has been requested by someone else. This policy makes sure that the member posting the book has the best opportunity of having another member request their book.
